Why, 'Fashion Bloggers Why'?

By Amy CT · July 9, 2010 · 12 Comments · 738 Views

Screencap from Fashion Bloggers Why?

As my "Midlife Crisis" post a couple of days ago may have suggested, I'm not exactly a born fashion blogger, and the world of fashion isn't exactly one that I have all that much sympathy with - and so when I stumbled across the blog Fashion Bloggers Why? recently, I have to confess that I was almost looking forward to a little bit of a giggle.

That is, until I started reading the posts.

I think that it's only fair that someone from "this side" of the war (even someone as dubious as me) has a chance to argue our case before this blog gets out of hand, and overly offensive. I have to confess that I'm not the kind of person who enjoys reading High Fashion blogs like the ones featured in Fashion Blogs Why? - which include some of the most popular blogs on the internet, such as Sea of Shoes and Style Rookie - but these blogs' own popularity must, in some way, merit them the right to post what they post? They wouldn't be this popular if people weren't interested in what they had to say, surely?

Although, in some ways, I think Fashion Bloggers Why? may have a point (it isn't exactly 'dressing down' when you're wearing Chanel), I do think that it is atrocious that the girl behind this blog seems to see herself on a pedestal when she can make comments like this:

"Dear imbecile: Anyone who freakes out about things like soo turquoise nailpolish they buy at the Hamptons is a pretentious asshole. Really? Your greatest concern is nailpolish? Fuck you. Why don’t you freak out about the fact that you look like Big Bird in that outfit?"

- Apparently without any guilt!

And so, I left a comment on one of her posts, in return (it seemed only fair!) - and, oh, look. Comment Moderation. Does that suggest to anyone else that this blogger may have received some unwelcome criticism in the past, as well?

Now, I don't want any of my readers to think for one second that I am posting this blog in order to incite hatred against Fashion Bloggers Why? - because I'm not; not least because that would involve stooping to the levels this blogger stoops to.

I don't agree with what this blog is doing - but nor do I agree with all fashion bloggers.

What I do think, on this matter, is that it's only fair that we get fair warning.

What do you think?

I completely agree with you! The reason I don't read most fashion blogs is because they are either out of my range of reality, but who has the right to have a blog devoted to criticizing them? Not cool.

Thank you for this post, I had no idea this was out there. While I see your point, sites like this honestly don't bother me. I probably wouldn't have bothered to have a look had you not written so succinctly. Its obvious to me that she's trying desperately to be like another blogger who actually has command of the written word and can be quite witty in her criticism's. There isn't the tiniest spark of creativity in any of her diatribes, and to me they're simple and juvenile. Maybe I'm too jaded after seeing over a decade of internet trolls who hide behind their computer to be bothered by anyone's opinion online? I mean how serious can you take someone who at the very least can't be bothered to spell properly while using a platform that depends on communicating with the written word, yet has the gall to criticize spelling and grammar? Child's play.

I think the words "Here here" seem apt.

Gosh, such negativity!
Her blog not yours! Smiling
To be perfectly honest it repulses me. I hope the people she writes about don't take the bitchiness to heart because that would be incredibly sad. Unfortunately I think Jane, for example, is far too used to it.

I agree with Idee Fixe in many ways. Nothing wrong with a little criticism, but for god's sake, can't you at least be witty about it? Otherwise, what's the point? Humorously poking fun is one thing, but this blog is just hateful and boring!

Agreed. It's teh way she is handling this blog that gets to me. It's fine to criticize, but what she is doing isn't criticisim, it's flat out bashing of a whole blogging community.

im worried i may be soon... someone saw a tweet a sent with the blogs address as i was amazed someone could be so horrible and to be honest i thought she was a total asshole.
so then one of the girls went on and posted my URL and now its turned into a gang-up-on-madeleine fiesta in the comments section.
its just so cruel what she does...

She's just jealous, and the only thing fashion bloggers can do about it is laugh. And laugh at the jealousy of the commentaries too. I just want people to reply to the post of mine and Amy's URL's so I can laugh at everyone who is jealous of us!

She has a right to her blog as much as the people she criticizes and you all defend. I'm really tired of seeing the best comeback being, "She's just jealous." Though we'd probably all like the disposable income and free time of many of them, envy is reductive and ignorant. Halcoholic has admitted to financial trouble for pretnatal care but shows off her new Alexander Wang. Mom of Shoes brags about a DIY she pays hundreds of dollars for other people to do. It's often a blunt critique but mainly a deserved one.

I don't take sides but honestly, I was entirely entertained by this featured blog. I found her through your your interview with the writer. I found it funny.

I'm really tired of seeing the best comeback being, "She's just jealous."
-> That also what the author of FB, Why!? said about another person. (won't go back on it to find the post)
But I agree, it's really a gimmicky idea in the wrong way, and when I read something like "You're just jealous" I remember how, when I was in middle school, that girl and her posse bullied me and when I had a panic attack and the next day defended myself the teachers punished me and they all said I was "just jealous", uh?
I don't see how it is funny: she's just insulting people.
Some people does that to you even when you dress "normally" (ie, jeans and a T-Shirt), I don't see how it is different with people who are dressed... well, some on this blog are dressed normally and she also insult them? I don't see how it is different with people who are dressed in a way she find ridiculous.
Plus, IT'S NOT CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM IN ANY FUCKING WAY!
There is only stuffs like "she is ridiculouuuus lol ur ur ur", but she don't even tell us why she think That Person is dressed in a ridiculous way.
In some way, it makes a bad reputation to all blogs who would express the same opinion but in a more reflected way, where there are "why" or at least "well I don't know why but this is how I feel, let me try to explain".
